Changtongya, January 31 (MTNews): Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Changtongya Block, Mokokchung conducted a demonstration program at Kelingmen village on Saturday, 28 January.
Demonstration on “Sanitation and Piggery Waste Management” was conducted by resource person Dr Wapangsashi Walling, Farm Manager, State Hatchery Unit, Mokokchung. He demonstrated to the farmers on preparation of potash solution and its use to disinfect the pig sty. He emphasized on deworming their pig to keep the animal healthy and the farm environment free from parasites.
Resource person Amenla Jamir, ATM, Changtonya Block and Toshirenla Longkumer, ATM, Changtongya Block conducted demonstrations on “Cultivation Practices of Sweet corn” and “Package and practices of Chili” respectively. Potash, dewormer, seeds, neem oil, biopesticide, seed tray, sprayer and manure were distributed to the farmers.
At Kobulong block:
Demonstration on “Varietal Performance of Maize”
Meanwhile, ATMA Kubolong Block under Mokokchung also conducted a demonstration on “Varietal Performance of Maize var.HQPM-1, HQPM-3” on January 30, 2023 at Yimchalu village.
Resource person Tsuktirenla S Jamir, Assistant Technology Manager, ATMA mentioned that maize is called “queen of cereals” because of its high genetic yield potential. She deliberated on field preparation, seed rate and sowing, nutrient management and water management where she emphasized on the critical stages of irrigation – which are seedling emergence, knee height, flowering and grain filling stages.
Intercultural operation, pest and disease management and harvesting were also elaborated. Further, management of Fall armyworm (FAW) was discussed.
At the end of the demonstration, Maize Seeds (var.HQPM-1, HQPM-3) provided by the District Agriculture Office, Mokokchung were distributed to the farmers. Altogether 10 farmers attended the program.
Demonstration on “Application of biofertilizers in jhum field”
ATMA Kubolong Block also conducted a demonstration on “Application of biofertilizers in jhum field” on January 30, 2023 at Yimchalu village.
Only a particular plot of land is used for cultivation over a set period of time during Jhum cultivation which causes loss of fertility of that land. Therefore, in order to revive the land by increasing the soil fertility for higher crop production, incorporating biofertilizers in the soil is required.
Therefore, ATMA Kubolong Block conducted a demonstration on “Application of biofertilizers in jhum field” where resource person Tsuktirenla S Jamir, Assistant Technology Manager explained that biofertilizers are substances which contain microorganisms, which when applied to seeds, plant surfaces and soil colonizes the rhizosphere of the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant.
She also deliberated on the types of biofertilizers, advantages of biofertilizers, its availability in nature and its importance in today’s farming scenario. Further, steps of application of biofertilizers in soil and seeds were demonstrated.
Biofertilizers were distributed to the farmers at the end of the demonstration. Altogether 10 farmers attended the program.
