ATMA Kobulong Block inaugurates “Fishery Farmschool” at Longpong in Longjang village

Mokokchung, 12 May (MTNews): The Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Kobulong Block inaugurated a “Fishery Farmschool” at Longpong, Longjang village in the Kobulong block of Mokokchung on 11 May. Meyatoshi Longkumer was appointed as the farmschool teacher. C Amongla Jamir, BTM, ATM, elucidated the concept and operationalization of the farmschool.


Aligned with the farmschool initiative, a training session on Pond Management and Common Carp Breeding was conducted to achieve remunerative and sustainable aquaculture.

The resource person, Nekenchang, Assistant Fishery Inspector from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mokokchung, stated that sustainable and productive fisheries and aquaculture enhance food and nutritional security, increase income, improve livelihoods, promote economic growth, and protect the environment and natural resources. He covered a wide range of topics, including nursery pond management, rearing pond management, stocking pond management, pre-stocking pond management, and measuring the quantity of manure and lime required for pond maintenance. Practical demonstrations included measuring the pH level in the pond using pH test strips.

At the conclusion of the program, pH test strips and lime were provided to all participating farmers by ATMA, Kobulong Block. A total of 21 farmers, along with ATMA staff, attended the program.

In another initiative, a group of 10 women farmers was mobilized into a Farmers’ Self Help Group (FSG) called Navy. The mobilization of the Navy FSG aimed to assist farmers in supporting their households through various activities such as animal husbandry, kitchen gardening, poultry farming, beekeeping, and mushroom cultivation. Additionally, a seed fund was provided to a Farmers’ Interest Group (FIG) named Kinunger FIG.
