The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Mokokchung, Ongpangkong South Block, conducted a training program at Chungtia Village on February 15, 2025, on the topic “Importance and Marketing Aspects of Coffee Plantation.”

The resource person for the training was Bendangkumzuk, BTM. The session began with a brief introduction to coffee, its native origin (Ethiopia), and how it is brewed from the roasted and ground seeds of tropical evergreen coffee plants. He also shared the history of coffee in today’s world market. The largest producers are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia, while the biggest consumers are the US, Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

He further explained that Coffee Arabica, which is grown in Nagaland, has the same taste and aroma as Ethiopian coffee, which is why the government of Nagaland has focused on engaging more coffee growers.

He highlighted the health benefits of coffee, such as improving liver health, aiding heart failure, promoting brain health, keeping the body active, assisting in weight loss, improving mood, fighting depression, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and aiding digestion, among others.

He also shared that intercropping coffee with black pepper can be economically efficient and resilient. These crops are often grown together because they have similar climate and soil requirements.

The training program ended with a discussion and an interaction session. A total of 15 farmers (12 female, 3 male) attended the program, along with ATMA staff.
