Atsulemba Ozukum adamantly asserts his commitment to the value of hard work and his view that “Rendering a modest service is preferable to remaining jobless.”
In order to understand more about two-wheeler taxi services and the desired preference of two-wheeler taxis in congested traffic hours in town, Mokokchung Times would like to introduce Atsulemba Ozukum, a rider who owns a registered two-wheeler taxi in Mokokchung and is a resident of Salangtem ward, Mokokchung. Alem owned the two-wheeler taxi privately, and following confirmation of a two-wheeler taxi permit, Alem started providing his services on August 17th, 2022. To further his exposure, he also created the Instagram page @mokokchung_delivery_express.
Alem claims that as part of his job, he serves as a delivery agent and offers passenger services to regular commuters in the neighborhood. Alem mentioned that, despite the vocation he now chooses, he still prefers to produce music. He added that this was something he used to do in the past. He further reveals that his desire for independence and the means to sustain himself, if not his family, was what spurred him to start the business.
Alem added that prior to wanting to work with other small-business owners to transport locally, he used to ride a motorcycle. He said that he established his own Instagram page, @mokokchung_delivery_express, as part of his ongoing development. He continues by stating that he immediately decided to switch from package delivery to passenger services, selling his motorcycle and replacing it with a Scooty. He mentioned that anyone in the Mokokchung district could now get in contact with him for the service.
“I offer affordable rates, ranging from Rs.50 to Rs.100 for town trips and Rs.100 to Rs.200 for routes travelling to nearby villages,” he said when discussing the rates and charges. He added that for each extended mileage, they charge Rs. 30 per kilometre travelled.
Except for the delivery of cakes, Alem commented, “We do every kind of service a two-wheeler can do, like picking and dropping and delivering parcels and items.” He continued, “Our services are available anywhere in the Mokokchung district as well as some neighbouring locations in bordering districts like Lumami, Chare Village, and many more.”
Alem continued by saying that, unlike buses, they offer a rapid and efficient means of transportation while charging only half the fare (hire rate) of standard taxis. He says thus, in order to reconcile serving the demands of the general public while also providing competitive pricing and service. He also added that, after deducting daily costs like food and fuel, he earns between Rs. 500 and Rs. 600 from his daily services. He noted that there were variances in daily income and went on to say that he occasionally made Rs. 1000.
He continued by mentioning a few clients who frequently called him for his services. He remarked that whenever they called, he would simply rush there without asking them a question because he already knew where they were heading. He also concedes that there were regulatory difficulties associated with running a two-wheeler taxi service in an area where they routinely encountered drunken passengers. “The majority of inebriated clients don’t pay correctly, therefore we have no choice but to accept it,” he explained.
When asked what the best advantages of having a two-wheeler taxi service in town are, Alem contends that two-wheeler taxis are more practical and economical for the general populace because they offer services from the clients’ doorsteps or designated landmarks all the way to their precise destination while charging the least amount possible. Although two-wheeler taxis are not considered as safe as other forms of public transportation, he says they are nevertheless safe for use by the general public since they outfit the passengers with safety gear and maintain safe, comfortable speeds. Bikes provide a faster way to commute through traffic, which is the best benefit for approaching a two-wheeler taxi. He expressed that it’s a win-win situation for both commuters and riders.
As he wraps up, Alem also conveys a message to young people, saying that no endeavour is too big or small and that self-sufficiency is the key to personal growth – Make good use of your time, and figure out how to be independent.
