An awareness program on the theme “Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection: The Journey Towards Viksit Bharat 2047” was held on November 7, 2025, at the Indoor Stadium, St. Joseph’s College (A), Jakhama. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Commerce, St. Joseph’s College (A), and the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Nagaland. The initiative aimed to educate students about consumer rights, the role of legal metrology, and the significance of responsible consumerism in building a developed India.

Joint Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of LMCP, Bendanglila (NCS), attended as the Special Guest. In her address, she explained that Legal Metrology plays a vital but often overlooked role in ensuring fairness in everyday transactions, such as weighing goods or purchasing fuel. She said that the enforcement system functions quietly to protect both consumers and traders by maintaining accuracy in weights and measures.

Citing examples of irregularities in packaging and measurement, she cautioned that such practices are not only unethical but also punishable by law. She urged students to be vigilant consumers, to check prices, expiry dates, and product weights, and to report violations. “Small acts of awareness lead to big waves of change,” she remarked, encouraging participants to spread awareness in their communities. She concluded with a reminder that “Fairness starts with accurate measurement.”

Joint Controller of LMCP, Limatoshi Jamir, in his keynote address, said that Viksit Bharat 2047 envisions a fully developed India by 2047. He called upon all citizens to contribute to this mission by promoting consumer awareness and practising honesty in trade.

Resource person Abraham, Additional Public Prosecutor, Nagaland Lokayukta, explained the key provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, outlining rights such as the right to safety, right to information, right to choose, right to be heard, right to redressal, and right to consumer education.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Kepozo Kapuh, Former College Ambassador, and began with an invocation by Dr. Sr. Thresiamma V. G., Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs). Greetings were delivered by Moatemsu, Head of the Department of Commerce. A special song by Sangnyu Yenla added a cultural touch to the event. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mughahito Tuccu, General Secretary, followed by a benediction from Rev. Fr. Vipral John, PG Coordinator.
