The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has strongly condemned the reported rape and sexual abuse of a minor girl by her biological father in Kohima district, which allegedly resulted in her pregnancy, and called for stringent legal action against the accused.
In a condemnation note, the AWO described the incident as an appalling crime and a grave violation of the child’s dignity, safety and fundamental rights.
It said a father was expected to provide love, protection and security, adding that the alleged abuse represented a deeply disturbing betrayal of that trust.
“No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially at the hands of someone who is entrusted with her care and protection,” the organisation stated, stressing that such crimes must be dealt with firmly under the law.
The AWO pointed to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which provides a stringent legal framework to protect children from sexual abuse, exploitation and assault.
It called on the concerned authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation and initiate stringent legal action under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and other applicable laws to ensure timely justice.
Calls for survivor support and protection
Emphasising the need for a survivor-centred response, the AWO urged the authorities to provide the minor with medical care, psychological counselling and all necessary support to help her recover from the trauma.
It also stressed that her privacy, dignity and identity must be protected at every stage.
The organisation called on society to stand firmly against all forms of sexual violence and break the silence that often allows such crimes to remain hidden. It said protecting children was a collective responsibility and that there could be no justification or tolerance for such acts.
The AWO said the survivor deserved compassion, justice and unwavering support, while the perpetrator must be held accountable for the crime.
