The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation following the recent exposure of an organised sex trafficking racket in Kohima, which involved the trafficking and exploitation of a minor girl.
The arrests of nine individuals, including the alleged mastermind, have highlighted the disturbing reality that such illegal activities are occurring in society. In a statement, AWO leaders said these practices are “completely alien to our Naga culture, values, and way of life,” and described the exploitation of vulnerable individuals as “a grave crime, moral degradation, and an assault on humanity.”
The organisation appreciated the swift and courageous action taken by the Kohima Police in rescuing the minor and apprehending the accused. At the same time, AWO urged authorities to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly and without leniency, and that networks facilitating such crimes are eradicated entirely.
AWO also stressed the importance of providing continued support to the survivor, including counselling, rehabilitation, and protection. “The AWO remains committed to safeguarding the dignity of women and children, and to combating all forms of abuse against them,” the statement read.
While lauding the police for successfully busting the racket, AWO appealed to citizens, particularly parents, community leaders, and institutions, to remain vigilant and collectively prevent such destructive practices from taking root in Nagaland.
The organization concluded by emphasizing that trafficking, prostitution, and sexual exploitation must be confronted collectively, with a strong resolve to protect women, children, and society at large.
