The first-ever October Fiesta, organized by People’s College, Mokokchung, was held today at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung, with the theme “Breaking Barriers.” The event, aimed at fostering unity, joy, and self-expression, was attended by students from various institutions, community members, and dignitaries with Thsuvisie Phoji, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, as the Guest of Honour.

The Minister of Rural Development and SIRD, speaking on behalf of the college management, highlighting the institution’s core mission of community service. Articulating his vision of empowering students, Jamir emphasized that People’s College is not driven by competition but by a commitment to giving back to the community. He expressed that the college aims to offer quality education to advance the community and sought public support for this mission.

Jamir also envisioned the college as a place that nurtures future leaders, urging parents to appreciate the value of local education. Acknowledging the socioeconomic strain and negatives of student migration, he encouraged parents not to send their children elsewhere for studies available in Mokokchung, emphasizing the importance of students staying connected with their cultural roots through local education.

DC Mokokchung urges for human interaction and competitive spirit

In his speech, the Guest of Honour and Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, expressed his pleasure at seeing participation from various colleges and institutions. He noted that Mokokchung has long been an epicenter and pioneer in the fields of Christianity and education. Phoji added that education continues—and will continue—to be the key factor in driving societal change, breaking down barriers, and building bridges.

He also acknowledged the recent change in the college’s ownership but affirmed that its mission of providing quality education remains unchanged.

Phoji further addressed the growing need for human interaction in an era of heavy reliance on technology. He stressed the importance of emotional bonding, encouraging students and the community to “reach out to our friends and family and maintain human interactions, not just through technology.”

He also emphasized the importance of fostering a competitive spirit among Mokokchung’s colleges, stating, “This spirit should be aimed at achieving the best results, and inculcating it depends not only on the students but also on the college authorities.”

He concluded by encouraging the institutions to strive to become centers of excellence.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Principal of People’s College, Dr T Amongla set the tone for the day, emphasizing that the event’s theme was more than just a catchphrase. “The theme is more than just a catchphrase, but a call to action,” she stated, adding that the event was all about unity, joy, and expression, bringing together students and the community in celebration.

The event featured a special song by Clark Theological College, a performance by Muse Band from the Class of Music, and was brought to a close with a benediction by Gracy Aye, President of the EU People’s College. The chairperson for the event was Temjensola, Assistant Professor of Political Science.

The October Fiesta has set the stage for future events that celebrate the blending of education with culture, community service, and holistic development for students in Mokokchung.

Following the formal program, which featured speeches by distinguished guests, the event transitioned into a lively celebration with various competitions and activities.

Students and attendees participated in fun-filled competitions, including musical performances, dance contests, painting, sketching, and Ikebana— the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The event also featured food stalls, fresh vegetables, and local handicrafts, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

The fiesta brought together a mix of creativity, culture, and competition, ensuring a memorable experience for all who attended.
