The Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) paid solemn tribute to former CAN executives who passed away during the 2023–2026 tenure at the opening of the 5th CAN Convention, held on 9 January 2026 at St Xavier Parish, Jalukie. The remembrance formed a reflective and prayerful beginning to the Convention, during which the gathering observed a moment of silence, commending the departed souls to God’s eternal mercy.
Thettayil Joseph (1954–2023), who served as the Ecclesiastical Assistant of CAN during the 2000–2003 tenure, was remembered for his pastoral zeal and keen interest in promoting lay leadership in the Church. Those who worked with him recalled his warmth, accessibility, and lifelong dedication to education and pastoral ministry, particularly in Nagaland, where his service left a lasting impression on students and families alike.
Lucy Nsu Rangma (1960–2024), former Joint Secretary of CAN (1983–1987; 1991–2000), was remembered as one of the pioneering leaders and foundational figures of the Association. A trailblazer in both civic and Church life, her leadership, faith, and commitment played a significant role in shaping CAN in its formative years and continue to inspire generations of lay leaders, especially women.
Mezhü-o Marcus Solo (1952–2025), who served as Treasurer of CAN from 2016 to 2020, was fondly recalled for his calm demeanor, integrity, and unwavering commitment to Catholic values. A guiding presence within the Association, he carried out his responsibilities with prudence and humility, earning the trust and respect of his colleagues. His life of service remains an enduring example of faithful stewardship.
The Association also remembered in prayer all members of CAN who passed away during the past three years, entrusting them to the loving mercy of God.
Following the tribute and observance of silence, the 5th CAN Convention formally got underway with the Opening Ceremony, with Firhesie Nyuwi, Executive Member of CAN, serving as Master of Ceremonies. The ceremony featured a musical welcome by the St Xavier Brass Band, the flag hoisting by Jaison C J., Parish Priest of St Xavier Church, Jalukie, and the rendition of the Convention Theme Song by the Zeläangrong Catholic Youth Association, Nagaland. Elias T Lotha, Advisor and former President of CAN, delivered the Welcome Address, highlighting the importance of unity and committed lay participation in the life of the Church.
The opening program culminated in the Inaugural Mass, solemnly celebrated by Carolus Neisalhou Kuotsu, Vicar General of the Diocese of Kohima and Ecclesiastical Assistant of CAN, as the Principal Celebrant. The Eucharistic celebration invoked God’s blessings on the Convention and its deliberations, marking a prayerful and dignified beginning to the proceedings. The liturgy was coordinated by the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral Parish, Kohima.
The triennial convention will conclude on 12 January 2026.
