In celebration of a decade of educational service, Seshat Tutorials organized a Career Counseling and Guidance Seminar on “Life after Class 12 Arts” at Longkumer Kilem, Mokokchung on 20 January 2024, marking the beginning of a year-long series of events commemorating their 10th anniversary. The seminar attracted a vibrant audience of young minds.

Mr. Dhurba, the Director of Seshat Tutorials, welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of the Arts stream, emphasizing that it offers valuable opportunities beyond the more commonly emphasized science stream. He challenged the stereotypical focus on Science and highlighted the seminar’s aim to empower students with knowledge and guidance about the plethora of opportunities awaiting them after Class 12.

The career guidance seminar aimed to enlighten students about the diverse and promising career paths available in the Arts stream.

The resource person for the event was Sashikokla Jamir, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Fazl Ali College. The key points of the program included an understanding of the Arts stream, guidance on choosing the best courses after 12th Arts, and a Career Aptitude Test to help students identify careers aligning with their personalities.

Understanding the Arts Stream
Sashikokla Jamir provided insights into the subjects under the Arts stream and outlined the scope, including the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP) and one-year postgraduate options. She explained the progression from certificate courses to diplomas, degrees, and the possibility of pursuing a Ph.D. with a good GPA. Additional opportunities, such as the Special Elective Credit (SEC) paper and internship programs under the new National Education Policy (NEP) FYUGP, were discussed.

She also shed light on the availability of certificate courses, diplomas, and internship opportunities within the FYUGP framework under the NEP. Sashikokla Jamir’s key advice to students was to “take it slowly but be focused.”

Choosing the best courses after 12th Arts
The resource person guided students on the steps to choose the best courses after 12th Arts, emphasizing calm thinking and planning. Her step-by-step guide encouraged students to introspect, identify their interests and passions, gather information, consider future career prospects, assess their strengths and weaknesses, seek expert advice, and prioritize institutional reputation. She emphasized the importance of having a plan B and encouraged students to network with professionals in their fields of interest.

The speaker highlighted entrance exams humanities students can take, such as SAT, MRNAT, NCHMCT JEE, NIFT, and more.

To further aid their self-discovery, she introduced free online career aptitude test websites like CareerOneStop Interest Assessment, enabling students to identify careers best suited to their personalities.

In a passionate closing note, Ms. Jamir quoted Anthony Robbins, reminding students that “the meeting of preparation with opportunity generates the offspring we call luck.”

She encouraged students to attend such programs in the future, citing benefits like motivation, direction, goal achievement, optimal resources, reduced stress, skill development, networking opportunities, confidence, and life satisfaction.

Career Aptitude Test
To further assist students, a Career Aptitude Test was conducted during the seminar to identify careers that best fit their personalities. The resource person also recommended free online test websites like career aptitude test, career explorer, career one stop interest assessment, etc.

She cautioned against limiting thinking to AI and emphasized the importance of creativity over relying solely on artificial intelligence.

The seminar concluded with a thought-provoking message, drawing inspiration from the Bible verses Psalms 16:3 and 32:8.

Ms. Jamir emphasized the importance of dedicating oneself fully to every task, regardless of its perceived stature. She reminded students that regardless of their chosen careers, giving their best effort and maintaining integrity are essential cornerstones of success and personal satisfaction.
