Census 2027 to serve as basis for 2028 delimitation: Patton

On the second day of the 7th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, MLA Kuzholuzo Nienu raised starred questions in relation to the upcoming Census 2027.

Responding to the query, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister-in-charge of Home, Y. Patton, informed the House that the Government of Nagaland has received notification from the Government of India for the conduct of Census 2027, which has been published in the Gazette of India.

Patton stated that the Home Department has been designated as the nodal department for the conduct of the Census, with the Home Commissioner notified as the Nodal Officer. He added that the notification has also mandated the freezing of administrative boundaries from January 1, 2026, till March 31, 2027, to facilitate the operations. To oversee preparations, a State Level Coordination Committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.

In a supplementary question, Nienu further sought clarity on whether the upcoming Census would be used for the 2028 delimitation exercise.

To this, Patton replied that the Census 2027 would indeed form the basis for the delimitation.

During his concluding remarks, CM Rio, referencing Census 2027, he stressed on all sections of society coming together for its successful conduction. Dr Rio also spoke on the importance of enumeration of the four tribes namely Kuki, Kachari, Garo and Mikhir so as to be recognized as a Non-Naga Indigenous Inhabitants of the state.

The CM also suggested creating an online application with the database of all immigrants in the state for easy accessibility to the authorities and citizens alike to help the government in curbing the issue of illegal immigration.  (With inputs from DIPR)
