The Central Government has approved projects worth over Rs 1,800 crore to provide electricity to thousands of tribal families and remote villages in Northeast India. The initiative aims to ensure reliable power supply and improve living conditions.

During a Lok Sabha session on Thursday, Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb and other MPs sought updates on efforts to provide 24×7 electricity in rural and tribal areas of Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.

In response, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said Rs 62 crore has been sanctioned to electrify 11,664 households in Tripura under the PM-JANMAN scheme, while Rs 43 crore has been allocated under DA-JGUA for 8,189 households.

Other northeastern states have also received funds under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and other initiatives:
· Meghalaya: Rs 436 crore for 50,501 households
· Mizoram: Rs 80 crore for 15,167 households
· Nagaland: Rs 70 crore for 10,004 households
· Assam: Rs 786 crore for 1,27,111 households
· Manipur: Rs 214 crore for 36,972 households

Arunachal Pradesh was allocated Rs 55 crore for 8,453 households under RDSS and Rs 20 crore under the Vibrant Villages Programme to electrify 1,683 border-area households.

Tripura will also see 1,703 households get off-grid solar power under the New Solar Power Scheme, part of a Rs 50 crore project benefiting multiple states, including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka.

The minister said power supply in rural areas has improved to 21.9 hours daily, while urban areas receive 23.4 hours.
