Imphal, 27 July (MTNews): In the wake of widespread outrage and a united opposition’s demands for justice, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been entrusted with the investigation of the shocking Manipur horror video, which captured the barbaric act of two women being paraded naked by a violent mob.

The Union Home Ministry has referred the case to the CBI, sources said.

The video, which surfaced recently, sent shockwaves across the nation and drew condemnation from all corners. In response to the public outcry and to ensure an unbiased investigation, the Central Government has decided to transfer the case to the CBI.

Additionally, the government plans to conduct the trial outside Manipur, the state that has been experiencing unrest for the last three months. The decision to shift the trial location comes as an effort to ensure due process and to safeguard against potential influence or interference during the proceedings. The Union Home Ministry will file an affidavit in this regard before the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the individual who allegedly recorded the Manipur sexual assault video has been identified and apprehended and the mobile phone used to record the video has been obtained, a top Home Ministry official said Thursday. This is expected to serve as crucial evidence during the investigation and trial.

In light of the ongoing violence and turmoil in Manipur, the government is taking additional measures to foster peace and stability in the region. The Union Home Ministry is making efforts to convene talks between the Meitei and Kuki communities, both of which have been at the center of the unrest. The initiative, being planned under the ministry’s supervision, aims to bring representatives from both communities to the negotiating table.

As per the official, 12 rounds of talks have been held so far, with six rounds involving each community.
