The Centre Chakhesang Public Organization (CCPO) has issued an ultimatum to the Deputy Commissioner of Phek district, expressing strong concern over what it termed as “negligence” by KKB Company in the repair and maintenance of the two-lane road from Pfutsero to Phek via Sakraba.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on Monday, CCPO president Vesopa Nakro stated that despite the Government of India providing funds for a four to five-year maintenance period under the official contract, the condition of the road has deteriorated severely.

The organization highlighted instances of landslides blocking the road, collapsed retaining and protection walls, poorly maintained drainage systems, and widespread cracking caused by substandard workmanship.

The memorandum also accused private individuals of worsening the situation through quarrying and unauthorized development along the route. It demanded immediate repair and restoration works, including the rebuilding of collapsed walls, treatment of sinking areas, proper filling of potholes, and removal of landslide debris that has been obstructing travel and farming activities.

CCPO criticised KKB Company for carrying out superficial repairs by applying thin tar coatings instead of following proper procedures to remove defective layers before resurfacing. “At several points, those repairs have been peeled off already,” the memorandum stated, calling for strict adherence to engineering standards in all future works.

The organization also pointed out that landslide debris has accumulated at several stretches, obstructing movement and posing difficulties for both commuters and farmers along the route.

The organization further alleged that the company has failed to conduct jungle clearance along the Pfutsero–Phek stretch, particularly between Zero Point and the 20 km mark via Sakraba, Porba, Pholami, and Khomi. It also questioned the company’s sincerity, claiming that “no machineries have been deployed within their allotted stretch as and when time calls for.”

The CCPO urged the Deputy Commissioner to take up the matter with the concerned authorities and ensure that all pending works are completed before October 31, 2025, ahead of the maintenance period’s expiry on November 13, 2025. It warned that any further lapse on the part of the concerned authorities in dispensing their responsibilities on time would compel the organization to initiate “heavy action.”

Photographs documenting the road damage were enclosed with the ultimatum submission.
