Kohima, 6 July (MTNews): The Nagaland Government spokesperson and Minister KG Kenye stated today that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given assurance to a delegation from the Nagaland Government that the Centre is considering to exempt Christians and ‘some tribal areas’ from the purview of the 22nd Law Commission Exercise regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given assurance to a delegation from the Nagaland Government led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio that the Centre is considering to exempt Christians and certain tribal areas from the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The delegation, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, consisted of the entire cabinet, including the speaker, two MPs, and bureaucrats, Kenye stated in a press release. They held discussions with the Union Home Minister in New Delhi regarding the implementation of the UCC in Nagaland and the demands put forth by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO).

Kenye stated that the delegation apprised the Union Home Minister about the concerns and reservations surrounding the UCC proposal and the significant implications it would have, particularly in the context of Nagaland. The delegation emphasized that Nagaland is a Christian state, and Article 371(A) of the Constitution safeguards their religious practices against any central laws.

Kenye further mentioned that the Union Home Minister assured the Nagaland government delegation that the Centre is contemplating exempting Christians and certain tribal areas from the 22nd Law Commission Exercise.
“The assurance by Amit Shah came as a great relief as it will avert major upheavals,” Kenye said.
