The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India, has deputed two National Level Monitors (NLMs) to Nagaland for an on-ground review of the implementation of the National Livestock Mission (NLM) from May 28 to 31, 2025, covering Peren and Dimapur districts.
The NLMs — Dr Rishipal Singh and Dr Lalit Joshi — were assigned to assess the execution and impact of Central sector schemes under the livestock development program. The evaluation began with a state-level briefing held at the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in Kohima.
The meeting was chaired by Vikeyie Kenya, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland. Also present were M.D. Sharma, ISS, Assistant Director, DAHD, along with state officials and nodal officers of various Central Sector (CS) and Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS). Officials from DAHD joined the session virtually.
The briefing session began at 10:30 AM with a presentation of the current status of schemes including the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), and National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD).
Following the session, the monitoring team visited a livestock entrepreneur in Kohima district and then proceeded to Dimapur for further field inspection.
The NLMs will spend four days in the state, evaluating the implementation of livestock schemes, interacting with beneficiaries, and proposing corrective measures for effective delivery. The field visits will cover both Peren and Dimapur, two districts identified for scheme monitoring under the National Livestock Mission.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr BM Sunep, Additional Director and Head of Department, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Nagaland.
According to a DIPR report, the livestock sector now contributes over 30% to the Gross Value Added (GVA) of India’s Agriculture and Allied Activities, making it a critical pillar of the rural economy.
