The Community Health Centre (CHC), Chozuba, Phek district, in collaboration with Eastern Christian School, observed Menstrual Hygiene Day on Wednesday, 28 May to raise awareness and break taboos around menstrual health.

Imkumnaro Longchar, Staff Nurse at CHC Chozuba, delivered a talk on the importance of menstrual hygiene during the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Longchar stated, “As per the directive from the National Health Mission under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, we are directed to observe Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May 2025 to break taboos and raise awareness about good menstrual hygiene management.”
She highlighted that the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) aims to create awareness on key adolescent health issues, thereby instilling positive behavior among adolescents. “We try with new innovative ideas and activities to keep the interest of adolescents and generate demand for the services rendered by this innovative program,” she said.
Longchar emphasized that menstruation is a natural part of being a woman and encouraged the use of appropriate menstrual products such as sanitary pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. She advised changing sanitary pads every 4–6 hours, even if not fully soaked, as prolonged use could lead to bacterial growth, rashes, itching, or even infections.
She also spoke about the importance of proper disposal, urging young girls to wrap used pads properly and avoid flushing them in toilets. Addressing period cramps, she suggested the use of hot water bags, rest, or light physical activity such as walking. She also advised avoiding junk food during menstruation.
“Menstruation is not a curse,” she said, encouraging girls to support one another, speak openly, and share knowledge to overcome stigma and misinformation around the subject.
