New Delhi, November 23 (MTNews): The Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland, V. Shashank Shekhar, IAS, met with various student bodies and young working professionals from Nagaland based in Delhi at Nagaland House, New Delhi On November 21, 2022.
CEO Nagaland delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of young voter registration and participation, with a special emphasis on free and fair elections, C-Vigil, and other issues. He encouraged young voters to register during the present e-Roll summary revision and to exercise their right to vote during the election.
The CEO also mentioned how, at a recent CEO’s Conference, the Election Commission stated that there are many students and young working professionals studying or working outside their respective states, and that there is now an emphasis for the department to connect with this section of the population and to further facilitate enrolment and participation for these voters.
The Joint CEO gave a brief PowerPoint presentation on the basic information for new voters’ registration. The Joint CEO emphasized during the presentation that India has the largest youth population, accounting for approximately 66% of the total population.
“Not only does this show the voting power of this demography, but it also indicates the demographic which would be most impacted, and therefore, the population that should care most about voting,” he explained.
Sharon Longchari, Nagaland’s Joint Chief Electoral Officer, presided over the meeting.
The meeting was attended by over 50 people from various student unions in Delhi, including Naga Students’ Union Delhi, Angami Students Union Delhi, Delhi Eastern Naga Students Union, Ao Students Union Delhi, Chakhesang Students Union Delhi, Sumi Students Union Delhi, Lotha Students Union Delhi, Rengma Students Union Delhi, and young working professionals from Nagaland.
The formal session was followed by an interactive session in which attendees shared their views and suggestions, and officials present addressed and noted doubts and questions. The program was organized with the assistance of Nagaland House Delhi’s Office of the Resident Commissioner.
