The Government of India has handed over the investigation into the Khopanala explosion case in Chümoukedima to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
According to a statement issued by the Nagaland Police, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), through a communication dated July 27, 2026, entrusted the investigation of the explosion case registered at Chümoukedima Police Station to the NIA.
The case relates to the incident that occurred at Khopanala, Chümoukedima village, on July 13, 2026.
The statement said the Central Government, after forming the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 had been committed, directed the NIA to take over the investigation under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the Act.
The decision was taken considering the gravity of the offence and its national security implications, the statement added.
The Nagaland Government and Nagaland Police will coordinate with the NIA to facilitate the handover process as required under law, the statement issued by the PRO, Police Headquarters (PHQ), Nagaland, Kohima, said.
