Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the Unity Gate at Chumoukedima on 30 November, 2023. The NPWD National Highways undertook the task of executing this project, with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio overseeing its supervision. The Unity Gate, according to CM Rio, was strategically constructed on a cliff rather than across the road, in order to avoid obstruction and aligns with the Dimapur 4-lane road bypass via the NH 29 bridge road.

Chief Minister Rio, speaking at the inaugural program, described the Unity Gate as a “Naga traditional gate which has all the combination of traditional designs, motifs and with a note “Welcome to Hills of Nagaland” in harmony with the Government of Nagaland’s logo and theme. Rio emphasized that the Unity Gate stands as a permanent structure, representing the synthesis of Naga tradition and culture.

Expressing his optimism, Rio envisioned the Unity Gate as a catalyst for Naga unity, peace, and the preservation of cultural activities. He extended his gratitude to contractors, consultants, the NPWD department, government agencies, local bodies, and NHIDCL for their generous contributions. Rio urged everyone, not just Nagaland residents but people from other states or countries, to take care of the Unity Gate, designating it not just as a symbol of Nagaland but as a potential tourist destination.

Vision for development near Unity Gate

Chief Minister Rio shared his vision for developing the areas surrounding the Unity Gate, proposing lighter constructions such as a food court, cafe, toilet blocks, and a high mast light for grandeur day and night views. He assured that issues with landowners would be addressed and compensated, with the remaining land utilized for public utility. Rio envisioned the development as an employment generator for young entrepreneurs, emphasizing the sale of local produce, ethnic food, and coffee.

Rio expressed hope that the Unity Gate would instill a sense of unity and belonging among the Naga family, serving as a beacon of goodwill to all who encounter it. He extended his wishes for state peace, development, unity, harmony, and progress.

Technical aspects of Unity Gate

Chief Engineer NPWD (National Highways), Er I Tiameren, provided a technical report highlighting that the Unity Gate’s architecture draws inspiration from the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the people of Nagaland. The specifications include a length of 55ft, breadth of 12ft, and a towering height of 56.5ft.

The structure, according to Er I Tiameren, is primarily a Reinforced Cement Concrete frame featuring combined footing, raft foundations, columns, beams, and a slab. It incorporates roof shingles on the sloping roof, decorative stone works such as cladding, dressed stone works for base and two carved gate monoliths.

It also incorporates four huge wood carvings and about six stone boulders erected as decorative elements. The project has proper illumination in the exterior including the area beyond the main road. The edifice is well lit with sufficient flood lights and LED lights.

“These works have been protected with melamine sealer mate and remaining exposed works have been painted. Total project cost is Rs 180 lakhs constructed by M/S Chabou & Co and Home consultant was M/S Paragon Prime and Executive Agency was PWD (NH) Kohima Division,” stated Er I Tiameren.
