Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers TR Zeliang and Y Patton, Advisor Er Kropol Vitsu, and MLA Kevipodi Sophie, visited the landslide-affected stretch of National Highway-2 near Phesama village on July 22, 2025. The inspection comes in the wake of a major landslip that sank a 37-metre portion of the highway, completely disrupting connectivity between Kohima and Imphal.

Expressing concern over the recurring landslides in the area, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of both immediate relief and long-term preventive strategies. “National Highways are the lifelines of a nation, essential for connectivity and economic activity,” Rio stated, underscoring the importance of restoring and safeguarding the critical route.

He instructed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to avoid short-term fixes and instead construct a proper Cement Concrete (CC) bridge. “Don’t do temporary work. Construct a proper CC bridge and, if required, go for a flyover so that debris can pass below without obstructing the road,” he said. He also advised the use of concrete, iron rods, and, if necessary, piling to fortify the vulnerable sections.

Rio acknowledged the terrain challenges posed by the state’s hilly landscape, stating, “This is not a one-time issue; it has been happening since our childhood. The landslides and road obstructions are a lifelong challenge.” He further recommended developing an alternative highway-compliant route to prevent village roads from being damaged by heavy vehicles diverted during disruptions.

NHIDCL Executive Director RP Singh informed the delegation that persistent rainfall had turned the area into slush, preventing the entry of restoration machinery. However, temporary work may be completed by August 18, weather permitting. Rio, while accepting the constraints of monsoon work, emphasized the need for a temporary passage and preparedness for the more dangerous landslip season of August–September.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the strategic importance of the route, which leads to Kisama, the venue of the Hornbill Festival. “Last year, repairs continued until the last minute. This time we must plan well in advance and coordinate with NHIDCL, the district administration, and other stakeholders,” he asserted.

In response to a request by Phesama Village Council Chairman Beizo M Kuotsu, Rio directed the Kohima Deputy Commissioner to conduct a proper survey for disaster compensation to affected farmers. Urging collective preparedness, he concluded, “We must not wait for the last minute. Let’s all be prepared.”
