Guwahati, 14 July: Gaurav Gogoi, the three term Congress MP from Assam’s Jorhat will continue to be the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, while senior Kerala MP Kodikkunnil Suresh will continue as the party’s chief whip, Congress General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal announced on Sunday.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi informed Speaker Om Birla of the latest appointments, which also include MP Kodikunnil Suresh as Chief Whip. Additionally, MPs Manickam Tagore and Dr. Md. Jawaid has been appointed as whips.
“Hon’ble CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji has written to the Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker informing him about the appointment of the Deputy Leader, Chief Whip, and two Whips for the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha,” Venugopal wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
While Gogoi will be the party’s deputy leader in the Lower House, eight-time MP from Kerala Kodikunnil Suresh will be the party’s chief whip, he said.
Gaurav Gogoi won Lok Sabha election from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in Assam, defeating his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Topon Gogoi by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.
Gaurav Gogoi’s win was viewed as a miracle as he took on the entire might of the ruling dispensation at the prestigious Jorhat Lok Sabha seat.
Earlier, the party had named Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition who was subsequently appointed to the post.
