S Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament and NPCC President, stated that the Congress Party should aim to form the government in Nagaland in 2028. He made this remark during his visit to Peren and Dimapur districts on February 18 as part of the statewide tour program led by AICC Secretary in charge of Nagaland, Christopher Tilak.
During his visit, Jamir urged DCC Peren and its two subordinate ACCCs to begin grassroots efforts to secure an MLA from their region. He also emphasized the need for party reorganization, if necessary, to prioritize the larger interests of the party. “A well-planned strategy will determine Congress’ success in the upcoming elections,” Jamir said.
Christopher Tilak, AICC Secretary in charge of Nagaland, briefed the gatherings on the purpose of his visit, which aimed to strengthen the party. Tilak emphasized the importance of understanding Nagaland’s political landscape. Although Congress currently has no MLA in the state, he celebrated the election of a Member of Parliament, calling it a significant achievement. He remarked, “While the ruling government has a Chief Minister, the opposition now has a Member of Lok Sabha,” signaling Congress’ growing presence in the state despite its challenges.
Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Tilak called for a clear strategy and active involvement from youth, women, and other stakeholders in building a strong electoral campaign.
He also voiced concerns over the BJP’s policies, warning that they threaten democracy and tribal rights. He highlighted the political instability in the Northeast and rising unemployment, which forces many youths to seek employment elsewhere.
Khriedi Theunuo, Working President of NPCC, spoke about the importance of unity. “Unity is strength,” he said, reaffirming the Congress Party’s commitment to secularism and its inclusive founding principles. He acknowledged the bipartisan support received in the last General Elections, noting that Nagas have come together as a united force. He also highlighted that the Lok Sabha election results reflect the people’s desire for change and expressed confidence in Congress’ strength due to its dedication to the Constitution and democratic ideals.
During the event in Dimapur, Taliyanger, Retd. Additional Director of Rural Development Department, Government of Nagaland, officially joined the Congress Party.
The program was held in Jalukie Town at Crave Inn Hotel (10:00 AM) and Congress Bhavan in Dimapur (1:00 PM). The events were chaired by Namrachang Hegui, President, DCC Peren, in Jalukie, and Kumjimong, General Secretary, DCC Dimapur, in Dimapur.
