The opposition to the Gau Dhwaj Yatra, which advocates for a nationwide ban on cow slaughter, has intensified in the Northeastern states. Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, who arrived at the Dimapur airport in a chartered flight on Thursday afternoon for the Gau Dhwaj Yatra in Nagaland, was not allowed to proceed beyond the airport premises by the district administration.

The Commissioner of Police and District Magistrate of Dimapur had earlier issued an order prohibiting the event across the districts of Dimapur, Chumoukedima, and Niuland. This decision, made in light of a directive from the State Government on 12 September 2024, cites concerns about potential disturbances to public order. The order underscores the protective provisions of Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India, which grants special safeguards to Nagaland regarding religious and social practices.

Following this, Shankaracharya, along with his team, had to return from the airport to his next destination after spending a few minutes at the VIP lounge at Dimapur Airport. In Nagaland, the ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra’ is scheduled for September 28, 2024.

“We explained to him that the government has taken a decision to not allow the yatra and that we have been directed not to allow them outside the airport,” Chumoukedima deputy commissioner Polan John told reporters at the airport.

Though Shankaracharya seemed a little agitated initially and wanted to know why they were not allowed to leave the airport, DC John said that they had informed Shankaracharya that the state government had made a cabinet decision, and they were just implementing it.

“He also understood that,” the DC added.
