Number of crimes in Nagaland showed a slight decline by about 2 percent in the year 2021, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Nagaland recorded 1478 cases of crime last year, down from 1511 cases in 2020, the report stated.
Of these, 1033 were Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes, 10 more than the year-ago period, while crimes related to Special & Local Laws (SLL) saw a decrease to 445 from 489 in 2020, the NCRB said in its report.
It further noted that Nagaland registered 67.2 crimes per one lakh population last year.
During the year, 39 people were killed in 27 incidents of murder, while 34 cases were registered for attempt to commit murder.
The state also logged five cases of rape, 10 cases of assault on women and one sexual harassment.
57 victims in 48 cases of kidnapping and abduction were registered in 2021 in the state, of which 23 victims in 20 cases were registered in the kidnapping for ransom category.
In 2021, Nagaland recorded nine offences against the state, including seven sedition cases.
Apart from that, the state saw the registration of 428 FIRs for theft, 77 for burglary, 159 for extortion and 16 for robbery. Also, 279 cases of auto/motor vehicle theft was the highest in the category.
As many 31 cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) were also recorded in 2021 in Nagaland, NCRB data showed.
Besides, authorities lodged 278 cases under various liquor and narcotic drugs-related laws while 8 cases were registered for violation of information technology and intellectual property related acts in the state last year.
Further, 100 cases were registered under Arms and explosives related acts and10 hit-and-run cases were also registered in 2021.
According to the report, a total of 60,96,310 cognizable crimes comprising 36,63,360 IPC crimes and 24,32,950 SLL crimes were registered in the country in 2021. It shows a decline of 7.6% in registration of cases over 2020. Crime rate registered per lakh population has declined from 487.8 in 2020 to 445.9 in 2021. During 2021, registration of cases under IPC has declined by 13.9% whereas SLL crimes have increased by 3.7% over 2020.
