The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) North-East Initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, organized the 3rd North-East India Buyer-Seller Meet in Guwahati today. The event continued the momentum from the 2nd edition held in 2022, focusing on strengthening trade relations between North-East India and neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and Laos.

Atreyee Borooah Thekedath, Co-Chairperson of the Assam State Council, ICC, highlighted North-East India’s strategic importance as a gateway to South Asia, with 98% of its boundaries shared with international borders. She emphasized the region’s potential for trade and exports, expressing hope that such platforms would forge closer ties between local entrepreneurs and the business community of neighboring countries.
Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, graced the event as the Chief Guest.

He underscored the interlinked economic growth and security between North-East India and the participating countries. Citing ongoing projects like hydro-power ventures in Bhutan, irrigation initiatives in Nepal, and skill development programs in Assam, he reaffirmed the Ministry’s active role in fostering regional development in collaboration with international financial institutions such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.

Margherita also highlighted North-East India’s strides toward becoming a hub for green technology and cutting-edge industries, citing the establishment of a semiconductor plant in Assam as a promising draw for investors.

The event saw participation from 60 buyers representing Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, and Laos, alongside 200 sellers from North-East India. Key sectors showcased included agriculture, horticulture, handloom, handicrafts, textiles, food processing, medicinal plants, IT, and tourism. Several expressions of interest were signed between North-East-based exporters and international buyers, laying the groundwork for future partnerships.

The Buyer-Seller Meet provided a platform for businesses lacking resources to explore global opportunities and encouraged international clients to tap into North-East India’s economic potential. Discussions revolved around enhancing trade opportunities and forming strategic business alliances.

Ishantor Sobhapandit, Regional Director-North East, ICC, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the significance of cross-border collaborations and expressing gratitude to the participants and dignitaries for their contributions to the event’s success. (With inputs from Shillong Today)
