Cyclone ‘Mocha’ nears Northeastern states; IMD issues warning

Mokokchung, 11 May (MTNews): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to five of the seven northeastern states about cyclone Mocha’s approaching effect.

 

The cyclone is forecast to make landfall in the Myanmar-Bangladesh border zone on May 14, bringing heavy rain and severe winds.

 

Meanwhile, an “orange alert” has been issued for that day for Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, which are close to Myanmar and Bangladesh. The department has asked disaster response agencies to remain attentive and prepared for any unforeseen calamity.

 

On 13 May, the IMD Regional Meteorological Centre issued heavy rainfall warnings for Tripura and Mizoram, predicting rain in most places and heavy rainfall in isolated parts of the two northeastern states.

 

Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in isolated areas of Tripura and Mizoram, as well as Nagaland, Manipur, and south Assam on 14 May.

 

Nagaland to experience heavy rains on 13 & 14 May: NSDMA

Meanwhile, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has informed that there will be frequent strong winds and isolated rain showers in the next few days. In a press release, the NSDMA informed that the State will experience heavy rains on 13 May and very heavy rains on 14 May. During this period, thunderstorms with strong wind and lightning are also to be expected, NSDMA further informed.

 

This information was part of the weather update with regard to Cyclone “MOCHA” for the coming days.

During this period, damages are expected to the unsecured structures, kutcha houses due to heavy rain and possibility of landslide in vulnerable areas, uprooting of trees and branches and damage to standing crops.

 

The NSDMA urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period. Public have also been requested not to shelter under large trees and near the river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash flood.

 

The NSDMA also asked all District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties during this period.
