Kohima, 27 May (MTNews): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) issued a weather advisory on Monday, stating that overcast rain to moderate light rain is likely to occur this week all over the state due to cyclone Remal making landfall over coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal.
Squally wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely to occur all over the state, NSDMA said in a weather update. During this period, there is a moderate risk of flash floods in a few rivers and foothill areas of the state within the next 24 hours due to persistent rainfall under the influence of cyclonic storm Remal, it added.
In response, the NSDMA, Home Department, urged the public to exercise caution and avoid rivers and lakes to prevent potential drowning and casualties from flash floods and landslides induced by the ongoing cyclonic rainfall.
It also requested all District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments to stay alert to handle any emergencies and protect lives and properties.
The cyclonic storm system is expected to move north-northeastwards and gradually weaken further into a deep depression by the evening of May 27, it added.
