The District AgroMet Unit (DAMU) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Mokokchung has issued crucial forecasts and advisories concerning agriculture in response to the impact of the depression, a remnant of cyclonic storm “Remal,” over east Bangladesh.

Farmers have been urged to postpone spraying operations, manure/fertilizer applications, and fresh harvesting of fruits and vegetables during the forecasted heavy rainfall period. Additionally, the adoption of water harvesting practices, such as rooftop harvesting and community tank utilization, is recommended to conserve rainwater and mitigate potential water-related challenges.

Issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, on May 28, 2024, the depression, currently situated over east Bangladesh, is anticipated to continue its east-northeastward movement. It is expected to weaken into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area over Eastern Assam and its surroundings by the evening of May 28th, 2024. As a consequence, heavy rainfall is predicted for May 30th, with particularly intense downpours expected on May 29th over the Nagaland-Mizoram-Manipur-Tripura (NMMT) region.

District-level warnings for the coming days have been issued, emphasizing the potential impacts of heavy rainfall, including waterlogging, flooding, landslides, and flash floods. Vulnerable structures are at risk, prompting authorities to advise precautionary measures such as avoiding staying in vulnerable buildings and steering clear of areas prone to waterlogging and landslides.
