The Dimapur Ao Youth Organization (DAYO) has described illegal taxation as the root cause of factionalism that is crippling Naga society. In a press release, DAYO said that it strongly believes that the “cancerous symptomatic growth of multiple extortion” can only be permanently resolved by bringing the signed agreements of 2015 and 2017 on the Naga political imbroglio to their logical conclusion by the Government of India.

The pulse of the people yearning for development and peace in Dimapur and Nagaland as a whole should be respected by one and all, DAYO added.

DAYO president Tia Longchar and convenor DAYO grievance cell Imkong Aier said in the press release that the “Indefinite Shutter Down,” led by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) this financial year, highlighted the persistent issue of unabated taxation and extortion by various Naga Political Groups (NPGs). Despite the Government of Nagaland’s efforts to address the DCCI’s demands, the youth organization said incidents of harassment and forceful extortions continue to escalate, particularly affecting the businesses community.

DAYO reiterated that only statutory bodies and law enforcement agencies are empowered to issue summons to anyone in conflict with the law, deeming actions by any other groups or entities as illegal. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to utilizing the three new stringent criminal laws, including filing FIRs and cases under the National Security Act as empowered by the Home Commissioner, to ensure that culprits are brought to justice.

DAYO further aid that there are validated reports of first-generation entrepreneurs being served extortion notices and calls with deadlines “even before the signboards are placed” and reasserted the December 2018 resolution of Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, which states that any threat and intimidation to the economic livelihood, businesses, and employment of its members will be dealt with according to the law of the land and customary practices of the Aos.

“Illegal taxation is the root cause of factionalism and has been crippling our society for too long, time has come to say enough is enough!” the DAYO said.

The organization also said it has established a helpline (8974851911) for complaints and quick response and urged its units to be on alert for any eventualities.

DAYO said it will continue to uphold the principle of “One Government One Tax” and remain vigilant as a watchdog for the good of the people. DAYO also pledged to extend full cooperation to the Police Commissionerate for prompt redressal, emphasizing that the security and safety of citizens are of paramount importance.
