Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, has issued two separate directives aimed at improving public safety, urban aesthetics and environmental standards in the district.
In the first order, the DC noted that unused and loosely hanging overhead cables and pipes across the city detract from Kohima’s visual appeal and pose multiple hazards, including the risk of electrical faults, fires and accidents during natural disasters. Such installations also obstruct emergency responses, hinder the movement of heavy vehicles and endanger pedestrians in case of breakage or fall.
All telecommunications companies, internet service providers, cable TV operators, water supply agencies and other concerned entities have been directed to remove redundant or abandoned cables and pipes within seven days from 21 November 2025. In addition, active overhead installations must be bundled, sleeved and securely fastened as per technical standards within the same timeline. Non-compliant materials will be removed by the authorities at the cost of the defaulting agency.
In a separate order, the DC expressed concern over dust and debris from uncovered building construction sites, which contribute to air and noise pollution and pose safety risks due to the possible fall of equipment, tools or structural components.
To address this, all construction firms, agencies and individuals undertaking building work in Kohima district must cover their sites with debris netting, scaffold wraps, perimeter hoardings or equivalent protective measures. Any negligence resulting in damage to public property, livestock or human life will invite strict penalties under relevant laws.
