Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, and Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo visited major landslide sites along National Highway 2 and National Highway 702 on July 23 to assess the damage caused by recent heavy rainfall.
Accompanied by officials from the district administration and the Public Works Department (National Highways), the team inspected the massive landslide between Chuchuyimlang and Unger villages, where about 100 metres of NH-2 was washed away and more than 200 metres of the highway sustained severe damage. The disruption has affected the movement of essential commodities and other goods along a key transport corridor serving Mokokchung, Longleng, Zunheboto and Tuensang districts.
The officials also interacted with members of the Chuchuyimlang and Unger Village Councils. The district administration, in coordination with the two village councils, has arranged an alternate route for light vehicles around the affected stretch. As the bypass is narrow, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the village councils and landowners to donate land to facilitate widening of the road by the PWD (NH) for safer movement of vehicles.
According to PWD (NH) officials, restoration of the damaged highway is expected to take several months.
The team also visited the landslide site on NH-702 near Changtongya, which connects Longleng and Tuensang districts. They assessed the damage and met affected residents. According to official sources, two houses were completely destroyed while several others sustained partial damage in the landslide.
The inspection was attended by officials from the district administration and PWD (NH), including those from Changtongya and Chuchuyimlang.
