The first phase of the Dimapur Airport expansion has been slowed by delays in the handover of land identified for the project, raising concerns over coordination between the agencies involved.

According to Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF), a portion of land identified for the project has yet to be fully handed over. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the federation said 18.9 acres required for the initial phase of expansion has not been completely vacated by the Assam Rifles Training Centre (ARTC), despite the matter having been examined multiple times by the authorities concerned.

The delay, according to DUCCF, has affected progress on a project considered critical for improving air connectivity and safety in Nagaland, with Dimapur Airport serving as the primary aviation hub for the state.

Stating that the airport expansion is a project of public importance, the federation said improved connectivity, passenger safety and long-term economic growth depend on the timely execution of the project.

It said unresolved issues related to land handover risk further postponing a nationally significant infrastructure initiative.

The federation appealed for swift administrative intervention to ensure that the land identified for the first phase of expansion is made available without further delay. It also sought the Ministry of Home Affairs’ intervention to facilitate coordination between the concerned agencies and bring the matter to a resolution.

While recognising national security considerations, the DUCCF said alternative arrangements for ARTC facilities should be expedited so that the expansion work can proceed without obstruction.
