Relief efforts underway as authorities assess damage
On July 7, a severe landslide struck Alahuto Ward No – 05, Zunheboto town, reportedly resulting in the complete destruction of six houses and placing 50 more at risk. Evacuation orders were issued, and 50 residents were safely evacuated. The landslide also significantly disrupted local infrastructure, causing road blockages, water supply disruptions, and power outages.
The Zunheboto District Disaster Management Authority (ZDDMA) provided emergency relief, including tarpaulins for the affected families.
On July 10, a team from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) visited the ward to assess the situation.
The Ward Disaster Management Authority (WDMA) in Alahuto Ward 5 was constituted on July 14, 2024, under the convenorship of Vikeshe Aye to oversee the response efforts. All official correspondence related to the landslide was channeled through the WDMA, henceforth.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens and will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” said Vikeshe Aye.
The Green Club Zunheboto also initiated a crowd funding campaign to support the victims.
A team of officials from the Geology and Mining Department arrived in Zunheboto on July 16. A joint survey effort, between the department and a team led by Vikeshe Aye, Councillor of Ward No. 5 of the Zunheboto Town Council and Convenor of the Ward Disaster Management Authority (WDMA) in Alahuto, assessed the damage, determined the cause, and identified preventive measures today. The survey will continue tomorrow.
The District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) was also deployed to demolish properties damaged by the landslide, supervised by the Task Force for Disaster Management at Zunheboto HQ.
The WDMA took the initiative to cover the landslide-affected areas with plastic sheets to prevent further soil erosion and other safety hazards, ensuring the safety of the surrounding community.
