Nagaland University, Lumami, organized a one-day Cyber Security Awareness program on August 21, 2024. The event was held in a blended format, with Rupin Sharma (IPS), DGP of Nagaland, serving as the Chief Guest.

In his address, DGP Sharma discussed the evolution from traditional methods to the Information Technology era, which has simplified tasks and improved accessibility. However, he warned of the associated risks, such as the misuse of personal data, and stressed the importance of online privacy. He advised participants to be wary of online scams, such as false cash prize offers, to avoid financial loss.

Regarding cyber security in Nagaland, Sharma highlighted the need for a robust cyber security infrastructure. He noted that the state must enhance its capabilities to address cyber threats. He also outlined various initiatives from both the Indian and state governments, including the establishment of Cyber Commandos for the police and the creation of Cyber Volunteers—civilians who can assist law enforcement. Sharma concluded by expressing hope that the University would collaborate with the state government to advance cyber security efforts.

He provided practical advice on maintaining cyber safety, such as using unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, securing devices, avoiding unnecessary apps, and being cautious with public Wi-Fi. He assured attendees that following these guidelines could enhance their cyber security skills.

Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, in his speech, underscored that in a technological age, it is of paramount importance to spread awareness of cyber security issues.
