The tragic assassination of Dimapur New Market community leader, Abdul Kayum Talukdar, occurred on the evening of June 8 around 9:30 PM at Signal Shaam Bazar, near Axis Bank. The incident has prompted a wave of outrage and condemnation from political leaders and the community.
Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, Y Patton, expressed his deep sorrow and outrage over the assassination. In a statement on social media platform X, Patton described the act as a heinous attack on peace and security. He called for a “swift and thorough” investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, adding, “We stand in solidarity with the grieving family and community during this difficult time.”
Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, leader of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), also condemned the brutal murder of Talukdar by unknown assailants. Nienu emphasized that such violence is unprecedented in the community and must not become a precedent.
“Though his appointment as GB has been controversial in an Urban area, and the instances which followed after that were witnessed by the public, the talks on the issue soon faded away which might also be an instance which led to this brutal incident. No matter what crime a person might have committed, he/she does not deserve to die or be killed in such a manner. No one is above the law and one must never take law in his/her own hands; instead let the law take its own course of action,” he stated.
Nienu expressed concerns that such crimes tarnish the state’s reputation and undermine the existence of a civilized society and government authority. He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a sincere and thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned to deliver justice promptly.
“No matter which community he/she may belong from, a life is a life and it needs to be protected. I stand in solidarity with Late Abdul Kayum Talukdar bereaved family members and the Muslim Community at large,” he added.
