Surveillance footage that recently surfaced revealed that Ms Debbarma was walking along NH-29 near Padampukhuri with her friend when an Alto vehicle struck her from the rear.

The driver responsible for the accident has been reported to be identified as Titova Chishi, 38 years old. According to the police, after hitting Ms Debbarma, the vehicle fled the scene, subsequently colliding with another scooter before crashing into a road divider. The scooter’s operator sustained minor injuries, while one of the three passengers in the car received similarly minor injuries.

This tragic incident has occurred amidst a surge in accidents in Nagaland, with the most recent incident happening on 15 August in Sungkomen Ward, Mokokchung Town, where a teenager lost his life.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released its latest data, indicating a substantial 49.2% increase in road accidents in Nagaland in 2021, totaling 746, as compared to 500 incidents in 2020.

Additionally, the “Analysis of Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India” for the year 2021 highlights that in India, speeding was the primary cause of 56% of road accident fatalities, while “dangerous or careless driving/overtaking” accounted for 28%, totaling 84% attributed to improper driving practices.

Variations were observed among states, with over 15% of road accident deaths in Meghalaya and Sikkim attributed to drunken driving. In Nagaland and Manipur, more than 20% of fatalities resulted from vehicle defects, while Mizoram and Nagaland reported over 13% of deaths due to inadequate road infrastructure. In states like Assam, Punjab, and Bihar, over 10% of fatalities were linked to adverse weather conditions, such as poor visibility.
