The Joint Council Forum has strongly condemned the illegal possession, distribution and circulation of suspected codeine-based cough syrup, describing the trade as a serious threat to public health and society, particularly the younger generation.

The forum appreciated the Dimapur Police and Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) for their “commendable and timely action” resulting in the seizure of 19,760 bottles of suspected codeine-based cough syrup.

While commending the seizure, the forum urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate the network behind the consignment and identify those involved in its procurement, transportation, financing, distribution and circulation. It said all those found responsible should be arrested and prosecuted according to law.

The forum stressed that the investigation should go beyond the seizure itself, stating that “the source, supply chain and beneficiaries behind such illegal activities must also be exposed and brought to justice”.

The Joint Council Forum reaffirmed its support for law enforcement agencies in their efforts to combat the illegal drug trade and called for continued action in the interest of public safety.
