Dimapur Police have arrested one person in connection with a fake currency racket after reports of suspicious activity surfaced on local YouTube news channels. A case has been registered at East Police Station.
Police confirmed that the seized notes were printed photocopies of Rs 500 denomination Indian currency. “The modus operandi was to use the notes to commit fraud,” Dimapur Police said in a statement.
Investigations revealed that the accused lured unsuspecting victims by first providing three to five genuine notes under the pretext of supplying counterfeit currency. Once the victims tested and confirmed the authenticity of the sample, they were persuaded to invest larger sums with the promise of receiving double the amount.
The accused then delivered opaque polyethylene packets containing fake notes, instructing the victims not to open them for two or more days, claiming a ‘chemical process’ was needed for the notes to appear genuine. This delay enabled the accused to abscond before the victims realized they had been duped, police said.
Police identified the accused as Miss Kitoshi alias Lituna alias Linokali. She is also wanted in two other cheating cases registered at Nuiland Police Station and Diphupahar Police Station. “It is suspected that she could be involved in multiple cheating cases and as such victims are requested to approach the Police,” the statement added.
“In this connection, Dimapur Police advises the public not to be misled by reports being circulated in various media platforms. It is clarified that the allegations and counter-allegations presently in circulation are largely based on misleading statements made by the arrested accused,” it added.
Police said that the case is being thoroughly investigated by an SIT and efforts are on to book all persons involved in this case.
