Dimapur Police sheds light on Tokugha Village hot pursuit incident

In the aftermath of a tragic police chase that led to the death of Ngukavi Yeptho, a 40-year-old resident of Tokugha village recently, the Dimapur Police on Monday has released its side of the story.

The Dimapur Police Commissionerate said in a press release that, on 25 July, 2024, a written FIR was received at Women Police Station, Dimapur stating that on the intervening night of 22nd July 2024, a group of four to five unknown miscreants in a white Scorpio vehicle abducted, assaulted and robbed two persons at the four lane highway under Showuba Village, who were returning home in a vehicle after dropping off a relative.

It was revealed that one of the victims was a lady. Accordingly, a case vide Women PS Case No. 012/24 U/S 63/76/137 (2)/308/35 BNS Act was registered and further additional sections 70(1)/140(1)/309(4)/351(3) BNS have been prayed to the court in light of the new findings during the course of investigation.

During the investigation, Dimapur police said it was revealed that after overpowering the victims, the assailants blindfolded them and forcefully took the victims to an unknown location, where the victims were not only robbed of their cash and belongings but even money from their bank accounts were forcefully transferred to an account via Gpay transactions.

It was further revealed by the victims during preliminary investigation that the lady victim was physically and sexually assaulted, according to Dimapur police. Further, while committing their crime, the assailants disrobed the victims and took photographs and videographs of the victims too with the intention to blackmail them from reporting the matter to the police.

Consequently, based on the investigation and the digital footprints recovered, police conducted a covert operation to nab the suspects. Subsequently, on the night of 25 July 2024, a team was dispatched to Tokugha Village under Niuland district, where one of the suspected prime accused was located, Dimapur police said. During the operation, as the team was approaching the village, the suspected prime accused namely Ngukavi Yeptho was seen fleeing in a motorbike which resulted in a hot pursuit.

During the chase, according to Dimapur police, the officers who were operating undercover in a private vehicle identified themselves as police and repeatedly warned the suspect to stop but he did not pay any heed to the repeated warnings and in the process the bike skidded and he lost his balance and fell on the road.

“The speeding vehicle which was in hot pursuit of the suspect could not stop instantly and one of the tyres slightly ran over the bike and the rider and ultimately crashed on the right side of the road into a drainage,” the Dimapur police press release said.

It further said that, immediately after the incident, the injured suspect was attended to and rushed to Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Dimapur police also said that all legal formalities were observed and the body was sent to District Hospital Dimapur for conduct of Post Mortem.

In this connection with the incident involving the hot pursuit, a case has been registered in Niuland PS vide Case No.0019/24 U/S 281/106(1) BNS R/W 183/184 MV Act for further investigation.

Further, in order to ensure fair and impartial investigation, police personnel involved in the incident have been placed under suspension, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime)/ PRO, Dimapur said in the press release.
