Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the virtual foundation stone for the extensive redevelopment of 508 railway stations across the country on 6 August. Among the highlights of this transformative project, PM Modi announced that Dimapur Station in Nagaland would showcase the local architecture of 16 different tribes from the state.

According to PM Modi, the design of the station buildings will draw inspiration from local culture, heritage, and architecture. He mentioned that Jaipur Railway Stations would incorporate glimpses of Hawa Mahal and Amer Fort from Rajasthan. Similarly, the Jammu Tawi Railway Station will be inspired by the famous Raghunath Mandir, while Dimapur Station of Nagaland will uniquely feature the local architecture of 16 diverse tribes from the state.

The overall redevelopment project, estimated to cost over Rs 24,470 crores, aims to modernize passenger amenities while ensuring well-organized traffic circulation, seamless inter-modal integration, and clear signage for passengers’ convenience.

Discussing the expansion of railways in the northeastern region, Prime Minister Modi asserted significant progress in doubling rail lines, gauge conversions, electrification, and the establishment of new routes. He further added, “Soon, all State capitals of Northeast India will be connected by the railway network,” highlighting the long-awaited second station for Nagaland after a century.

Revealing a development poised to enhance economic efficiency, Prime Minister Modi shared that over the past nine years, more than 2200 km of dedicated freight corridors have been constructed. This innovation has dramatically reduced the travel time of goods trains, enabling goods to move from Delhi-NCR to western ports in just 24 hours, a substantial improvement compared to the previous 72-hour journey. This acceleration in freight transport has resulted in a 40% reduction in travel time for other routes, significantly benefiting entrepreneurs, industrialists, and farmers.

The selection of the 508 stations for redevelopment covers 27 states and union territories, with Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan leading the count at 55 each, followed by Bihar with 49, and Maharashtra with 44 stations. The redevelopment forms part of the Amrit Bharat Stations scheme, envisioning the transformation of around 1300 key railway stations into vibrant city centers.

Prime Minister Modi also underscored the emphasis on green energy initiatives, declaring the government’s intent to generate green energy from every railway station. He also highlighted the installation of LED lights in about 70,000 coaches and the exponential increase in the number of bio-toilets in trains, which has grown 28 times since 2014.

PM Modi emphasized that all Amrit stations will adhere to the standards of green buildings, with an ambitious goal in mind: “By 2030, India will be a country whose railway network will operate on net-zero emissions.”
