The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (DLMCP), Kohima, on Tuesday conducted a consumer awareness programme under the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumer” at Don Bosco School, Kohima.
Addressing the students, Limatoshi Jamir, Additional Controller and Head of Department, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Nagaland, called on people to become confident and informed consumers.
Stating that consumer awareness remains low in many rural areas, Jamir stressed the need to empower consumers with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities. He said goods and services are required to carry mandatory declarations and urged consumers to check product quality and standards before making purchases.
“You must know what is right and what is wrong. Find out by yourself what is the best thing for you,” he told the students, encouraging them to become wise and conscious consumers.
Resource person Sunjib Rana, Advocate and Retainer Lawyer of the Kohima District Legal Services Authority, urged consumers to familiarise themselves with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which empowers consumers and safeguards their rights. He said consumers have the right to choose products and should insist on accurate information to avoid defective goods.
He also encouraged students to stay informed and seek redressal whenever they encounter anomalies.
Shiekhozo, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Kohima, highlighted the department’s role in ensuring fair trade practices, accurate measurements and consumer protection. He said the department has been conducting awareness programmes on consumer rights in educational institutions and with NGOs.
Earlier, Don Bosco School Principal Fr Panmei Innocent Liangkamang delivered the welcome address. The programme was chaired by Silo Jemu, Inspector, LM and CP, Kohima.
