Domestic workers in Kohima were urged to speak up against abuse and fight for their rights during an event organized by the Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) at D Block Panchayat Hall on International Women’s Day. The program focused on the theme “Rights, Justice, Action for all Women and Girls”, aiming to empower women and inspire societal change.

The resource speaker, Rheituohunuo Whuorie, Project Coordinator of Child Helpline Kohima, highlighted the challenges women face in society, particularly in Nagaland, where victims of abuse often remain unseen and unheard. She said, “The desire to protect family reputation and the accused’s image leads to silence, making the victim more vulnerable. If you witness or hear about such situations, don’t stay silent. Speak up, act, and help create a world where everyone can live peacefully and happily.”

Whuorie emphasized women’s rights to fair wages, equal education, safety, and timely medical care, and shared the history of International Women’s Day, connecting it to the ongoing struggle for justice and equality. She also highlighted resources available to victims, including Women Helpline (181) and Child Helpline (1098), and informed participants about shelter homes for women, girls, and children in need.
