The 2nd General Meeting of the Kohima Ao Pensioner Telongjem (KAPT), under the theme ‘How to live a healthy life physically, mentally, and socially,’ was held at Molu Ki, Merhulietsa, Kohima, on July 26.
Dr Tali Longkumer, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dimapur, who spoke on the theme, emphasized that to maintain good physical health and avoid health problems, one should stay physically active by engaging in regular exercise. This improves energy, stamina, reduces fat accumulation, strengthens bones, and contributes to a stress-free life.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and adequate sleep. Dr Tali advised attendees to have regular check-ups, even if they feel fit and strong, to diagnose any illnesses or diseases that may be developing. He highlighted the importance of routine check-ups for individuals with hereditary diseases, those engaged in harmful personal habits, and patients suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, cancer, etc.
While noting that physical and mental health are closely related, he explained that a disease-free person is not truly healthy if their mental and social well-being are not normal. He urged attendees to maintain good mental health by having healthy interactions with neighbors, friends, and associates, taking vacations, and seeking medical counseling if facing depression or anxiety.
Stressing the importance of a healthy social life, he encouraged everyone to build and maintain strong social connections with family, friends, neighbors, and the community, and to refrain from living in isolation.
In his exhortation, Er Lanu Toy, Retd Chief Engineer stated that retirement is not the end but the beginning of a new life with new responsibilities to serve family, society, and community. “Our work is not finished as long as we are alive, from childhood to old age,” he added.
During the program, a welcome address was delivered by Dr Watijungshi, President of KAPT, while the vote of thanks was proposed by N Wati Atsongchanger, Assistant General Secretary of KAPT.
