Dr Tolto Metha graces Silver Jubilee Closing Ceremony at Chiechama Village

The Silver Jubilee Closing Ceremony of Chiechama Peli Kro Kerepouko Kepekrokelie was graced by Dr Tolto Metha, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Member of NBM-IT, and Executive Member of Rattle and Hum Music Society Nagaland, as the guest of honour. The programme was attended by 11 farmers’ groups (Peli) and village residents on January 22, 2026, at the Amphitheatre in Chiechama Village, Kohima.

In his address, Dr Metha thanked the Chiechama Farmers Association for organising the event and said it helped revive traditional work culture in the village. He described agriculture as one of the richest industries in India and the world and urged youths to preserve the Peli system, stating that peer groups play a key role in learning culture, respect and discipline.

Highlighting the importance of bamboo cultivation, he said bamboo is well suited to the Northern Angami range and encouraged farmers and young entrepreneurs to take it up as a viable livelihood option. He noted that bamboo can be harvested within five years and has applications in construction, furniture, paper, textiles and cosmetics. He added that bamboo cultivation can generate employment, strengthen rural livelihoods, promote traditional skills and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration and soil conservation.

The programme was chaired by Vimelie Metha, convenor of the organising committee, with invocation by Rev Levi Rio. Folk songs were presented by Pelebeituo Zumvü, while greetings were delivered by Menuokholie Kire, Advisor, CGOK.

In the fire-making competition, Keneingutuo Rüpreo of Nourhe Peli secured first place, while Kevisezo Sogotsu of Mekrünuo Peli came second.

The ceremony concluded with a victory folk song, hornbill dance, group folk songs, Tati Pfhe duet, quartered performances and a village walk. The vote of thanks was delivered by Neitso Sogotsu, Advisor, CFA.
