Dümchak, formed in the year 2019 is a band from Mokokchung, comprising five members with front man Kilangtemsu who is also credited for his song-writing, Imkongmeren on Rhythm, Reshilong on lead, Wabangtoshi Jamir on bass, Moakumzuk on Piano and Limanuksung on the drums. The six members initially formed the band for a school concert but the members decided to participate in other contests and events in order to keep the enthusiasm for music burning amongst them.
The word ‘Dümchak’ is an onomatopoeic word for the sound produced by a drum which is also sub-textually used as a local expression for a musical glee. The word “Dümchak” was adopted as their official band name a few weeks after the band was formed. A group chat was created for the band and Dümchak was given its name because their humor had grown into giving weird names to anything and everything. However, after pondering much, owing to its significance and meaning, they decided to continue along with the band name as ‘Dümchak’.
Style of Music
As for Dümchak’s style of music, they experiment on various styles which keep their ethics flowing, enriching their channels and broadening their musical abilities. Some genres they work around include – Pop rock, math rock, progressive, alternative, funk, etc.
“We have this belief that with more experience in various genres – putting them into practice, our musical abilities broaden,” the band said.
Owing to the fact that they like experimenting with different genres of music; the band takes inspirations from the likes of Plini, John Mayer, 1975, Cong Wong, The Script, One Republic, Dirty Loops, Cold Play, Monuments, The Midnight and One Ok Rock .
The band admitted their admiration for bands in Nagaland such as Trance Effect, Polar Lights, Paradigm Shift and About Us.
Live Events
The first performance for Dümchak as a band was the Jubilee Memorial School concert in the year 2019 organized by the school at the Town Hall of Mokokchung. The same year they contested for the Inter-school Beat contest, Changtongya Beat Contest and secured 2nd position in both the contests.
Future
Speaking about their future as a band, the members express their love for music but at the same time admitted how they are all students and hence, juggling studies and music together is a difficult task.
“But we still manage to get past them with ease. The band has been working on some new songs for quite some time now. If all goes well, we will put out our new songs as soon as possible,” the band added.
“As students, we keep our main focus on our education but when it comes to music, our aim is to allow our thoughts to flow through it, our minds be penned down in those lines, verses and melodies and to get our music across those who relate to them. We have not been able to fulfill this task as most of the members are pursuing studies away from Mokokchung and coming together becomes an exhausting use of resources. With holidays coming up soon, we will try our best to put out our songs,” the band concluded.

· Mask our pain which was written during the Pandemic by Kilangtemsu is about how regularly lives were repeating the same cycle over and over again every single day and how often people would pray for a change in their lives, a turn of events to make it livelier and better. It was a reflection on how change did come but it wasn’t the change they prayed for. The lines, “Now, all I can do is share my music to the world songbirds singing, Morning breaks” is about how everyone tried to hide their pain behind masks and kept supporting one another.
