SAYO reiterates mandatory guide and entry timing rules

Trekking to Dzükou Valley has officially resumed following the containment of a wildfire that affected the valley for nearly 25 days.

Dzükou valley

The Office of the Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) on Thursday announced the reopening of the valley after what it described as a “thorough assessment” conducted by its volunteers in coordination with concerned authorities. The assessment was further supported by aerial inspection through helicopter services, confirming that the fire has been completely contained.

While declaring the valley safe for visitors, SAYO expressed regret over the “extensive damage” caused by the wildfire, noting significant loss to natural flora, fauna and wildlife habitat.

Despite the damage, the organisation expressed hope for ecological recovery, stating that the valley known for its seasonal wildflowers is expected to witness renewal in the coming months.

Reiterating an earlier directive implemented on October 1, 2025, SAYO stated that engaging a local tourist guide remains mandatory for all trekkers entering Dzükou Valley. Trekkers who fail to comply with this requirement will not be permitted entry “under any circumstances.”

The organization also reminded the public that trekking beyond 3:00 PM during winter (October–March) and 4:00 PM during summer (April–September) remains strictly prohibited.

SAYO extended gratitude to agencies, volunteers and well-wishers who worked to contain the wildfire and restore safe access to the valley. It further called on the public to cooperate in safeguarding the ecological integrity of Dzükou.
