India Post has announced it will discontinue its iconic Registered Post service starting September 1, 2025. The decision marks the end of a trusted communication method that has served millions for over 50 years. The move comes as part of a strategic plan to merge Registered Post with Speed Post to modernise and streamline postal services.
Registered Post has long been valued for its affordability, reliability, and legal validity. It was commonly used to send job offers, legal notices, and official correspondence. The service played a critical role in connecting citizens, especially in rural India.
Official data shows that registered mail volumes declined by 25 per cent from 244.4 million items in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20.
The drop has been attributed to digitalisation and growing competition from private courier services and e-commerce logistics.
India Post has directed all government departments, courts, educational institutions, and other users to transition to Speed Post. The new system promises faster delivery, improved tracking, and operational efficiency. However, concerns remain about cost. Registered Post rates began at Rs 25.96 plus Rs 5 per 20 grams, while Speed Post starts at Rs 41 for up to 50 grams, making it around 20–25 per cent more expensive.
Despite assurances that Speed Post will retain essential features like tracking and acknowledgement, the change has sparked nostalgia, especially among older users. Registered Post, rooted in the British colonial era, was seen as a symbol of trust and legal assurance across institutions and communities.
