The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) and the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have strongly condemned the brutal and unprovoked assault that occurred on August 8, 2024, in Pungro Town. The incident, described as a barbaric act, was allegedly carried out by the town commander of the GPRN/NSCN-IM, along with his accomplices.

The victims, identified as Sangtikiu and Ati, both members of the GPRN/NSCN (Kitovi) faction and of the Yimkhiung community, were reportedly beaten savagely with rifle butts and cane sticks while being held at gunpoint. ENPO and ENSF have called this act a “gross violation” of human rights and emphasized that any disagreements or issues, irrespective of their nature, should be addressed or settled through dialogue and peaceful means rather than resorting to physical assault.

“The manner in which this incident transpired reflects a total disregards of the principles of peace, justice and respect for human dignity and value. It underscores a growing trend of aggressive and unjustified actions that threaten the peace and stability of our communities,” a joint statement read.

The organizations also drew attention to the activities of Capt. Jangkhen, associated with the GPRN/NSCN-IM, accusing him of intimidating student leaders, individuals, and business establishments. Such acts of intimidation, they argued, not only disrupt social order but also undermine efforts to maintain peace and unity in the region.

ENPO and ENSF noted that these actions are in direct violation of the ENPO resolution passed on December 18, 2007, which explicitly denounces bloodshed, threats, intimidation, and violence within the ENPO jurisdiction. The resolution calls for resolving conflicts through peaceful and non-violent means and upholding the principles of justice and mutual respect. The actions of the perpetrators and those involved in intimidating others are in direct contradiction to these values, it said.

In light of these developments, ENPO and ENSF have called for immediate action. They urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the assault to ensure that justice is served. Additionally, they demanded an end to the threats and intimidation perpetrated by Capt. Jangkhen and his associates. The organizations emphasized the importance of taking measures to prevent further violence and restore a sense of security and respect within the community.
