The NSCN-IM is gearing up to observe the 9th anniversary of the Framework Agreement (FA) signed on August 3, 2015. The organization recalled its national struggle and political achievements and emphasized the importance of the FA as a testament to the Government of India’s (GoI) recognition of Nagalim as a sovereign state.

In a statement through its Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP), the NSCN-IM highlighted that the Nagalim national flag and constitution are integral parts of the FA, recognized and acknowledged in both letter and spirit. “The Nagas should treasure and hold on to the FA unsparingly lest we miss the sure promise of God. Why should we allow doubt and confusion to seal the doom of our fate? Our course is set: we are very sure and certain of what is ours and what we must be,” the NSCN-IM asserted.

The statement also underscored the historical context of Naga nationhood, noting that Nagas have never consented to be part of any other nation and have consistently resisted invasions. Key historical milestones include the Naga Club’s memorandum to the Simon Commission in January 10, 1929, the Naga National Council’s declaration of independence on August 14, 1947, and the plebiscite on May 16, 1951, where 99.9% of Nagas voted for independence. The NSCN-IM also reminded that Nagas were not signatory to the Panglong Agreement of February 12, 1947 which paved the way for the formation of Myanmar (erstwhile Burma) on January 4, 1948.

The NSCN-IM recounted the harsh measures taken by military forces to suppress the Nagas, including the deployment of heavily armed troops under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) by India and the military junta of Myanmar.
